Bike Month Confident City Cycling Class

Bike Month Confident City Cycling Class

If you want to gain more confidence riding your bike around town, this class is for you! As part of Bike Month, we at Transportation Services want to get everyone biking. This class is aimed at improving your biking skills on city streets.

This event will start at the Outdoor Center at Viking Union 150. Bikes and Helmets will be provided to participants for free, or you can bring your own. Please register for the event if you plan on coming so that we know how many bikes we will need.

We will begin by practicing bike handling skills on campus. Then we will take a ride downtown. If you are not feeling ready to ride on the street, feel free to attend the first half of the class. One of our stops will be at the Whatcom Transportation Authority’s Downtown Bellingham station, where everyone will learn how to put their bike on the bike racks on the bus.

You will learn:

  • Starting and stopping gracefully
  • Adding air to your tires
  • How and when to shift gears
  • Best ways to be visible and predictable to drivers
  • Taking your bike on a bus
  • Road placement in different situations
  • Triggering traffic light

Class Participants will have the option of receiving a set of free rechargeable bike lights, a bike multi-tool, or a bike handpump.

For disability accommodations, questions, or requests please contact Morgan Walden at atc@wwu.edu at least one week before the class. For more information on transportation and biking at Western, visit our website.

From Monday, May 6, 2024 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM PDT at Outdoor Center at Viking Union 150.
