Western Scream Queens Club Meeting

4 days 22 hours ago
Western Scream Queens Club Meeting

The Western Scream Queens in a club wherein we watch a horror movie and then discuss queer representation and symbolism while taking a deep dive into queer influence.

Come join us Thursdays at 6pm in Bond Hall 109

This club is intended to create a space where queers who love horror can gather and discuss their interests without judgment. The Western Scream Queens believe in the inherent value and queerness of horror in that it has the ability to tackle the issues other genres cannot and represent the Other like, well, none other. Queerness finds a safe place in that Other and many people like us have found a safe place within horror fandom. The Western Scream Queens meet every Thursday of the academic quarter and watch a queer horror film, which is a horror film with a queer creator and/or queer themes, followed by a discussion of the history and queerness of the film. This is an excellent opportunity to uplift queer horror creators and films that may have slipped through the cracks of cultural consciousness as well as to educate queer folks about our rich history within the genre.

*for accommodations, please contact Colter Lemons: lemonsc@wwu.edu

Cinema East Film: 'Cure'

6 days 22 hours ago
Cinema East Film: 'Cure'

The next film in the Cinema East film series at Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay Street) is Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s feature, Cure, which screens on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 7:45 p.m.

According the Pickford’s websiteCure is a “tour de force of psychological tension and a hallucinatory journey into the darkest recesses of the human mind.” The film involves a series of shocking murders that are linked by similarities that lead Detective Takabe Kenichi (Yakusho Koji, star of the Wim Wenders film Perfect Days) into an investigation to find out what connects them.

The Cinema East film series is co-presented by Western Libraries and Pickford Film Center, with film selections curated by WWU librarian Jeff Purdue. Films are often accompanied by introductions from educators and experts. Cure will be introduced by WWU Professor of Japanese Tyler Walker.

Walker has been Assistant Professor of Japanese at WWU since 2022. His scholarship on twentieth century Japanese literature has recently appeared in Journal of Japanese Studies, and is forthcoming elsewhere. In 2015, he worked as a translator for the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. He is currently teaching his favorite class at Western, which examines Japanese avant-garde, documentary, and animated films in global context.

For more information about the Cinema East series, please see the PFC website, or contact Jeff Purdue at: purduej@wwu.edu, (360)-650-7750. All PFC theaters are ADA accessible with wheelchair seating, and closed captioning and assistive listening devices are available at the box office. All are welcome to celebrate, learn, and be in community at the APIDA Festival 2024. The festival is a free event that includes dinner, a panel presentation, performances, local and community vendors, art, food, and more! This event includes fundraisers to support families displaced by the fires in Lahaina, Hawaii and a food drive to support the food pantries at WWU, WCC, NWIC, and BTC.

About this Celebration

Every May we reach toward the past, embrace the present, and move towards the future of Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) cultures.  APIDA represents a diverse community of more than 50 ethnic groups and includes people of Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi ancestry who trace their origins to the communities of these geographic regions. This year, we honor the APIDA legacy by sharing stories, collaborating, and enjoying everything from our Connected Roots to our Collective Futures.

Connected Roots.

With roots in more than 20 countries, Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi Americans represent diverse cultures with strong connections to family heritage and histories that center community, endurance and celebration. For many APIDA communities in the United States, there is a shared parallel experience of racial injustice, xenophobia and lasting impacts of colonialism that continue to have an impact today.  As we connect our present to our past, we can look toward a hopeful future

Collective Futures.

Standing strong and holding tight to the wisdom of those who paved the path before us, we work in community to amplify our voices now and far into the future.
