Volunteer to Welcome Canoes to Shore for Coast Salish Day

2 hours 34 minutes ago
Volunteer to Welcome Canoes to Shore for Coast Salish Day Coast Salish Day is a first-of-its-kind celebration of Indigenous Peoples locally and around the world right here on the shores of Bellingham Bay! There will be a Native art market, live music, a multifaith water blessing, and a canoe landing.

This will not be just any canoe landing: some of the canoes are coming from Hawaii, paddled by a team of Native Hawaiians, and another is paddled by an international coalition of Indigenous Peoples from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa!    For the canoe landing, volunteers are needed to greet four canoes at the shore when they land during the main event on Saturday May 25th. The desired window for volunteers is 10:30 am to noon, with the canoes expected to arrive around 11 am.

Tasks include presenting the canoes with wreaths when they arrive onshore, holding the canoes (so they don't drift back out to sea during the welcoming ceremony) and carrying the canoes up to their trailers (for that part, there will also be help from the crowd).

In addition to the canoe-greeting opportunity, we are looking for people who have or would be willing to wear salmon, orca, eagle, and/or other PNW wildlife costumes. These costumes would be for a procession of animals sacred to the Coast Salish peoples for the canoes to follow.

For accessibility accommodations, please contact Community Engagement Liaison Jacob O'Donnell at as.csc@wwu.edu

Book Talk & Signing with Celeste Mergens re: Menstral Health Equity

2 hours 34 minutes ago
Book Talk & Signing with Celeste Mergens re: Menstral Health Equity

On Tuesday, May 28th at 430p in Academic West 204 (doors open at 4p), Celeste Mergens will talk about her new book "The Power of Days" regarding her work to improve menstrual health and gender equity worldwide. The AS Bookstore will have copies on hand for purchase and Celeste will sign copies after the talk.

Celeste created Days for Girls International (DfG) here in Whatcom County in 2008, which has grown to serve nearly 3 million menstruators worldwide to end period poverty by providing menstrual health products and education. Celeste designed and patented a variety of menstrual health kits, which are sustainable, washable, and used on average 3-5 years. Kits cost less than $10 each to make.

Celeste's goal is to put DfG out of work. To date, the organization no longer provides free menstrual kits in several countries because DfG has helped individuals develop their own businesses to create and sell kits, resulting in economic benefit to these new business owners and their communities.

At the event, we are doing a product drive for new washcloths, new underwear, and still-wrapped bars of hotel soap. If anyone wants to donate cash to the cause, we’ll take that, too! We apologize that we are unable to take Venmo at this time.

Please contact Karen Stout at karen.stout@wwu.edu or 360.650.2563 if you have any questions or needs regarding this event. RSVPs appreciated, but not required.

WWU is an equal opportunity institution. For disability accommodation, please contact Karen Stout at karen.stout@wwu.edu or 360.650.2563. At least 5 days advance notice is appreciated.
